Dear Richard,
Taiwan is the name we Chinese call the island from time immemorial. Formosa
is the name the Portugese called it when they first saw it in the 15th
centrory and thus became known to the West.
The Island has been separately ruled by different government from the
mainland, but most countries in the world, as well as most of we Chinese on
both sides of the Strait, still think it part of China.
