Digital image to archival print

I have been told that one problem with some of the current colour
technology (inkjet etc.) is that the colours will actually fade! Secondly,
as Bob Morris said, if you are going to just do printing on a casual basis
you may well find that what you photographed, what appears on your PC
screen, and what your printer produces all have different colours! This has
to do with the way colours are handled by each of the systems. Even on the
same PC different photo editing software may give different results! As Bob
pointed out the use of professional "colour targets" helps a lot and
reproduction systems which allow automatic calibration between
scanner/camera, computer screen and printer is almost a must. When using
Kodak colour targets I think they are usually supplied with a file which
certain professional programmes will use to compensate for "digital colour
distortion". Similarly it is not unimportant whether your screen is
controlled via Windows (perhaps Mac also?) standard screen drivers, or
whether you obtain the proper calibrated drivers from the screen
manufacturer - usually as a dowload.
