VIth Plant Life of Southwest Asia Symposium, Van 2002
This symposium will be held at Yuzuncu Yil University, at Van,
Turkey from 10th to 14th June, 2002. The provisional programme is
as follows: 10th June, Opening Ceremony and lectures; 11th June,
lectures and poster session; 12th & 13th June, two one-day mid-
symposium field trips; 14th June, lectures and Closing Ceremony.
The symposium will be in English.
Offers of lectures or posters on the following themes are invited:
evolution and molecular systematics; ecosystems and vegetation;
adaptations, speciation, biology & systematics in phanerogams &
cryptogams; computer technology for the future of SW Asiatic
Botany; Flora writing in SW Asia; ethnobotany and wild relatives of
cultivated plants & phytochemistry.
The registration fee is US$250 (for students US$100), to be paid (in
cash) during registration on 10th June. It will include the abstract
booklet, two one-day mid-symposium field trips, lunches, coffee
breaks and the welcome cocktail. Accommodation will be in three-
star hotels at a cost of single room approx. US$40 and a double
room at US$50 per night. There will also be some limited
accommodation available in government hostels for around US$20
per night. These costs to be paid directly to the hotel or hostel
concerned. Accommodation must be booked through the
organisers. Transport from Van airport will be organised. A two-day
post-symposium circular tour around Van Lake will be available
through the organising committee at a cost of US$75.
All abstracts will be printed as submitted. Use white paper, deep
black type in 12 point, outline dimensions not exceeding 155 mm
length by 120 mm width, text single-spaced, title in capitals,
authors and their addresses in lower case. Please send abstract

The deadline for registration and abstracts is Friday, 1 Feb. 2002.
The second circular will be sent out to registered participants in
March, 2002. After this date, anyone wishing to register must pay
US$300. We regret that no further abstracts can be accepted for
inclusion in the abstract booklet after 1st of February, 2002.
Lecturers must submit their text during the symposium. All
lectures and poster abstracts will be peer-reviewed prior to their
publication in a special issue of the Turkish Journal of Botany. The
