June McCaskill

Dear everyone:  I was informed today that June McCaskill , Curator Emerita
of the J.M. Tucker Herbarium, died of a heart attack in the past couple of
days.  I know that this is a terribly sad day for all of us who knew her.
June was well loved by everyone over the four decades that she worked in
the Botany Department at UC Davis.  She was well known for her knowledge
about the California flora, especially weeds, and she was a major
contributor to the Growers Weed Identification Handbook.  June was also the
co-founder of the Davis Herbaria Society (in conjunction  with Grady
Webster and Larry Mitich), and she volunteered her time working with the
Friends of the Davis Arboretum as well.  She had a tremendous impact on
students and graduate students who were lucky enough to work with her in
the herbarium.

At the moment, no memorial service is planned.  As I find out more, I will
pass it along.  The herbarium will definitely try to plan some type of
campus service, perhaps in conjunction with the arboretum.  An obituary
will be appearing in the papers.  Per the wishes of Sue Armstrong, June's
good friend, donations in June's name can be sent either to the UC Davis
arboretum or to the UC Davis Foundation for the new Herbarium building fund
- I have long wished that we could name something for June in the new
herbarium - if anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them.  I am
sorry to have to relay such very sad news.  sincerely, ellen Dean
