I took Neal Evenhuis' advice and visited the HBS website. In a 1994 'How
many species?' paper I learned that 20% of the known Hawaiian biota is
introduced, and another 40% is endemic to the islands. Having read
horror stories about what exotics are doing to Hawaii, it wouldn't
surprise me to see those percentages reversed in the not-too-distant
future.
In my original posting, I should have added another target for
biodiversity salvage: inadequately known places being transformed by
exotic species.
Hawaii fits the bill. I wonder how the native ferns Jim Croft asked
about are coping with the introduced Cyathea cooperi?
