A gentlemen named Victor Fraenckel has a free DOS program called "inverse"
that calculates distance from lat/long data. I can send you a zip file if
you want. He also has other small geographic programs, too.

From Fraenckel's ftp site (ftp://ftp.wizvax.net/pub/personal/victorf ):
The following programs are ALWAYS available:
The programs are DOS based and should run on most configurations
of PC type machines.
RULE2LL:
Computes the latitude and longitude of a point on a map
given the easting and northing offsets from the lower left
corner of the map. The measurements may be entered in inches
or millimeters. Hikers with GPS receivers will like this
program.
LL2RULE:
Given a Latitude and Longitude of a point on a map LL2RULE
will compute the easting and northing of the point
referenced to the lower left hand corner of the map. Input
and output formats as well as map scale, map reference
ellipsoid and corner latitude/longitude are user selectable.
INVERSE:
Given the latitude and longitude of two point on the earth's
surface, INVERSE will compute the distance between the two
points and the azimuth of each from the other.
DIRECT:
Given the latitude and longitude of a point on the earth's
surface and the distance and azimuth to a second point,
DIRECT will compute the latitude and longitude of the second
point and the azimuth of the first point from the second.
This is the general case of RULE2LL. Travellers with GPS
receivers will like this program.
UTM2LL:
Given the UTM Grid Coordinates of a point on the earth's
surface, UTM2LL will compute the latitude and longitude of
that point.
LL2UTM:
Given the Latitude and Longitude of a point LL2UTM will
compute the UTM coordinates and zone of that point
FUTM2LL:
Given the UTM Grid Coordinates of a point on the earth's
surface, UTM2LL will compute the latitude and longitude of
that point. This program accepts it's input from a file of UTM
data and produces an output file of converted data.
These programs are to be found at the ftp site:
ftp.wizvax.net/pub/personal/victorf
as files inverse.zip, direct.zip, rule2ll.zip, ll2rule.zip, ll2utm.zip,
utm2ll.zip and futm2ll.zip.
The latest versions WILL be maintained there.
Please try them out if they sound interesting and let me know what
you think. Please send suggestions for improvement. Bug reports are
especially solicited as they will be used to fix the programs and thereby
benefitting everyone who uses them. Be specific with the bug reports so I
have a chance to reproduce the problem and hopefully stamp out the critters.
