Dear colleagues,
As the functioning Curator of Crustacea at The Zoological Museum,
University of Copenhagen it is my distinct pleasure to announce that we are
calling for applications to a position at the museum's Invertebrate
Department as Assistant Professor (adjunkt) with responsibilities in
Crustacea. The deadline for applications is the 15th of December, 1999.
This announcement will also be disseminated through CRUST-L and I apologize
for any cross postings.
The text of the announcement is enclosed in full, but I would like
to add a few personal remarks and clarify a few points that could lead to
misunderstandings:
1) The position as Assistant Professor is untenured. At the conclusion of
the three-year period of this professorship, the position may or may not
lead to the filling of a position as Associate Professor (tenured) in
Crustacea. Economics play an important role here. Providing that a
position as Associate Professor is announced in three years time, as we
hope, the holder of the position as Assistant Professor will not
automatically be guaranteed any formal advantage in filling the new
position. He or she will have to apply for the position as Associate
Professor on an equal footing with other applicants. Sorry to belabour the
point, but we feel it is important that applicants know exactly what they
are going in to.
2) The announcement below contains the stipulation that "Non-Danish
applicants are obliged to learn Danish to such a degree that they are able
to teach after 2 years." [i.e., teach in Danish, my addition]. Personally I
regard Danish as a reasonably easy language to learn, at least for those
with an English or German background, but I know people that would disagree
(some of them quite emphatically!). The point I would like to make here,
again to avoid any misunderstandings in the future, is that the obligation
to learn Danish is entirely the responsibility of the successful applicant.
Thus, he or she should not expect any financial support in this endeavour,
although we will be flexible if participation in classes cannot avoid
impinging on normal working hours.
3) Being an extremely pedantic person (at least that is what I am told), I
would like to clarify the section in the announcement relating to where the
application should be sent, as I feel the text below might lead to
confusion. The original application (just 1 set), with appendices but
without the selected papers, should be sent to the Faculty of Science
(address below) and in this letter the actual letter of application itself
should be addressed to "The Rector of the University of Copenhagen".
Furthermore, 3 copies of the application with all appendices, including the
selected papers (see below), should be sent to The Zoological Museum
(address below), all in the same envelope (or box, as appropriate). In
short, only 2 letters.
As stated below, please direct any requests for further information
to Professor Henrik Enghoff (henghoff at zmuc.ku.dk).
Best regards,
Danny
