Hello all,
Following-up on John Grehan's and John Holsinger's plea for distribution maps, and
linking it to Baumel's inclination towards electronic publication of the
"Check-lists, Guides, Floras/Faunas" thread, I have found very interesting the use
of the Xerox PARC Map Viewer (http://mapweb.parc.xerox.com/map) made initially by
the Flora of china project (http://flora.harvard.edu/china/) and recently by the
Vascular Plants Type Catalog project of the New York Botanical Garden
(http://www.nybg.org/bsci/hcol/vasc/). This application addresses, in part, Brian
Brown's efficient use of maps with respect to numbers of dots, since not only both
individual and cumulative taxon maps can be produced, but also many other
possibilities of summarizing geographical information (e.g., dot per data based
voucher, re: Neil Snow's comment).
Santiago.
