Subject: Re: Bears (fwd)
(Doug's note:) I pass this along because it is definitely a point worth
knowing - and a bizarre one, at that, certainly contrary to one's
expectations:
------------
Hi Doug,
I saw your message and thought I should write. There is new evidence that
once the pepper spray is on the ground, bears are attracted to it. In
fact, once someone opens a can of pepper spray for a deterrent against
attack, the can should be discarded or cleaned well. People have actually
seen bears rolling on areas covered with pepper spray. Bears hate the
spray in their faces, but perceive it as food when sprayed on something
else.
Recent information can be found on the web- I use to know of a site on
bears through the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club that mentioned pepper
spray as an attractant. I'll try and find it if you would like.
Hope this helps!
Marty
