The International Plant Names Index (IPNI) has a position open for a person
to help standardize data in the combined Index Kewensis, Gray Card Index
and Australian Plants Names Index.   The data to be validated
include:  authors of plant names, publication titles, collector
information, names of geographic locations, spellings of plant names,
etc.   Application must be submitted through the Harvard Human Resources

SCIENTIFIC EDITOR  (Botanical Names Editor)
Harvard University Herbaria.

Full-Time (Temporary position, 2 years)

Responsible for standardizing names within the Plant Names Project by
drawing on the experience of the senior editors and in coordination with
other project editors and through extensive library work.  Increase the
consistency and accuracy of the data in the International Plant Names
Index. Check and edit nomenclature and bibliographic records for IPNI.  Act
as liaison with editors at Kew Gardens and the Australian National
Herbarium to ensure consistency of records.  Encourage external input and
raise the profile of the project in the user community.  Work with PNP
programmers to design ad hoc editing tools to facilitate the
standardization of data. Determines contributors access level.

B.S. or M.S. degree in botany and strong editing skills.  Excellent verbal
and written communications skills.  Must have excellent problem solving,
organizational, planning and management skills.  Two years related
experience that includes using electronic file management tools, preferably
on UNIX platform.  Proficiency in English grammar, spelling, punctuation,
and office procedures. Familiarity with HTML and Netscape required, and
DBMS or spreadsheet desirable. Experience in academic environment and
knowledge of professional publishing desirable.  Experience working with
scientific names highly desirable.  Ability to work at keyboard for long
periods and to retrieve and shelve research materials.
