My apologies if this is a repeat, but since it hasn't yet turned up in my
mailbox and I should get copies of my own postings, I think it may have
gotten lost. -- Mary

On Friday, September 20, 1996 12:14PM, Paul Dessart
<dessart at D5100.KBINIRSNB.BE> commented on Peter Davis' query about the use
of the genus _Pieris_ in botany and zoology, and provided a list of
additional genera validly used in both groups. He concluded with the
following comment and question:

> By the way, I never found, up to now, a **binome** common to
>both Reigns (There is no _Pieris japonica_ among the butterflies...). Does
>anyone know, by chance?...
>
>Paul Dessart,
>Chef honoraire de la Section Insectes et Arachnomorphes
>a l'Institut royal des Sciences naturelles de Belgique.

I passed the comment on to Jan Haugum, currently working on a world
catalogue of the Pieridae, and he replied (by fax, see below) as follows:

     The butterfly
     _Pieris japonica_ certainly exists!

     O. D. _japonica_ Shirozu 1952 (_Pieris_)
          Sieboldia 1 (1): 18, pl. 4,5 f. 16-23

Generally considered a subspecies of _Pieris (Artogeia) napi_
(Linn.), but is now considered specifically distinct, e.g.,
"May be a good species" (Bridges 1988, Catalogue of
     Papilionidae & Pieridae).
