Names for sale

As an alternate twist to the "names for sale", I know of an example where
two rare plants in eastern Oregon were named after the major land owners on
whose ranches the plants grew, in the hopes this would increase their
willingness to protect the plants. Grimes & Packard 1981, Brittonia
33:430-434: "Both the Greeleys and the Mackenzies have been very tolerant
of botanists roaming the hills and have helped pull one of us out of a
ditch". Publication occurred before property rights and
anti-Endangered-Species-Act sentiments became such an inflammatory issue in
the American West; I don't know if the tactic has made a difference or not.
