Dear Taxacomers,
My thanks to Alfred Newton for passing on the information about
the geoagraphic place name databases, GNIS (for USA names) and GEOnet
(for foreign names). GEOnet solved many of my problems - the
wild-card (*) search ability is especially good if you need to find
names that you suspect are misspelt, or spelt in the way of
collectors country-of-origin rather than the indigenous spelling (as you
might find on labels in many European museum collections).
I have three places that beat the database that I thought fellow
Taxacomers may have some information on - preferrably lats and longs.
They are likely to be older names and all should be near the coast.
Banane, South-West Africa [=Namibia] collected in the 1930's
Anticosti, coll. 1903 - possibly north-eastern South America?
Iles Sandwich - is there another island other than the Hawaiian group
that also took this name?
Many thanks for any help.
Chris
