Bad Examples

The Handbook of Palaeoherpetology lists a couple of nice examples of
fossils described as reptiles which turned out to be no such thing. One
was some fossil tree branch (with scale-like surface, admittedly) which
had been described as a snake. The other was a spine from a gastropod
shell, which someone had described as a snake fang. Unfortunately, I
don't have the original reference before me.
