A group of science societies, lead by the Audubon Society and including ASC, ha
ve organized a call-in day to support the National Biological Service. We are
asking you to CALL YOUR CONGRESSIONAL REPRESENTATIVES (House and Senate) on May
24, next Wednesday, with the message that you support the NBS and urge Congres
s to fund it . Both House and Senate budget committees have listed NBS for eli
mination. This would mean loss of funds for all the longterm research and moni
toring that NBS does. The money would NOT go back to the old DOI bureaus. Thi
s would affect the extension programs as well. Emphasize the need for FEDERAL
support for environmental research that goes beyond state boundaries and crosse
s human generations. Newt Gingrich himself has stated that the US needs a biol
ogical survey to study its natural resources, like INBio in Costa Rica. You ca
n reach your Representatives in the House by calling the switchboard at 202-224
-3121 for the Senate and 202-225-3121 for the House of representatives. The fa
te of the NBS will likely be decided by June 1! Through partnerships NBS is su
pporting nat. history museums in Florida, Illinois, North Carolina, Kansas, and
Hawaii. ASC is working with NBS to provide information to the nation!
