[Simtrainer-l] Call to Action regarding U.S. DOE

Thanks Megan, it’s such an important time for everyone, especially educators, to speak out about what is happening. We can resist and we need everyone to participate. Parents, teachers, students… everyone who knows this insanity is hurting everyone.

Thank you, Megan, for speaking up in your educational environment even though others support these attacks actively or passively. There is no passive resistance- we are either actively trying to stop the attacks or we are supporting the attacks with no action.

Hello,

I just wanted to throw another plug for the 5calls app. I have used it repeatedly --- called multiple times a day before the vote for the continuing resolution. It's also nice to use to get the numbers for republican congress people that might be swayed towards our side that may not live in your state. You just change your location to one of their states, and then it gives you their number and the script again. The script is nice to have, but I almost always go flying off script with emotion.

Threads like this give me hope. No one dare speak of politics in my corner of the educational world (except me, lol--I act like there's no way any educator could support what's happening, but many from my area voted for this insanity) despite the huge detrimental impact it will have on students and families . Much appreciation to you all.

It is a dark time for all of us who care deeply about educating all students. For those who may not know about the 5 Calls app, I find it helpful since you can easily find your congressional representatives with phone numbers you can use in the app with even a suggested script for important topics. I called my reps this morning about my concern about the elimination of the DOE and the protection of IDEA.

Dear SIM Network,

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Public Law 94-142, known today as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The Administration has issued an Executive Order to begin dismantling the U.S. Department of Education. This would mean sending all policy, law, programming, and services, including IDEA, to other federal agencies without expertise on education issues.

The Center for Research on Learning at KU began in 1978 as one of five U.S. DOE funded institutes to research the type of instruction adolescents with learning disabilities require for access to the curriculum and their life aspirations. What we know today about effective instruction is possible due to federal funding. At this time, our grant funded projects continue to be operational, and we will continue to conduct research until we are told otherwise.

As a SIM network, we are advocates for students with disabilities and the support schools need to serve them. Your voice makes a difference! We hope you will make your voice heard as professional developers, teachers, instructional coaches, school administrators, and advocates for essential rights and services. Make your story personal.

Dismantling the Department of Education may have detrimental effects at all educational levels including:

  * Loss of federal protections of students’ rights,
  * Loss of direct, dedicated funding for special education services,
  * Loss of personnel preparation funding during an existing nationwide shortage of special education professionals,
  * Loss of the commitment of our nation to provide education for all in equitable and inclusive environments, and
  * Loss of essential research funding to advance the field of special education.

We urge policymakers to unequivocally reject these attempts to close the Department of Education.
