Hi Sue,I just trained a teacher of 5th grade English Learner (EL) students. The SIM training was also for Fundamentals in the Sentence Writing Strategy. She will begin using the strategy this school year. I also shared the attached planning graphic organizers with the teacher to help students plan to write single (and maybe multiple) paragraph compositions. Preskills for Paraphrasing works well. Because it begins with Pictures, students can generate words they know and the teacher can guide them to code switch from L1 to L2. they slowly build to sentences, which also helps them understand English grammar structure.

Tough to generalize re what is good for ELs. Language proficiency levels in both English and L1 are a major consideration in deciding best bets tools and approaches.
