Dear Fellow SIM PDers:
It's Cyndi Martin from the Chicago area. I am in the process of conducting
survey research for my doc dissertation in Reading, Language, and Literacy
at Concordia University Chicago. My dissertation proposal has been
accepted, my IRB app has been signed and submitted by my doc chair, so I am
nearly ready to start the research.
My initial proposal involved universities within the Concordia system;
however, due to the size of the potential sample, I am planning to expand
my participant group to include other universities/colleges as well.
My dissertation involves survey level research on basic English language
constructs necessary for effective reading instruction, and my target
participants are preservice EC/elementary and special education teachers
(undegrad or grad level - seeking initial certification/licensure). I
understand that some universities require their own IRB apps, and others
will provide Site Consent once IRB has been secured by my university.
I will send a summary of my proposal to any interested SIM PDers who would
consider assisting me with this research; I will plan to amend my IRB app
to reflect additional sites once I hear from you. The survey is available
via both electronic link and paper copies and will take approximately 20-30
minutes to complete. This could be done in class or sent to students to
complete on their own.
As educators and SIM PDers, we're keenly aware that effective reading
instruction involves strong pedagogy and content knowledge, and this study
addresses one important aspect of literacy content knowledge with a
particular focus on preservice special educators. Since these teachers
work with our students with the most significant reading disabilities, I
sincerely hope that this research will contribute to enhancing preservice
teacher preparation in the area of literacy instruction.
I greatly appreciate any assistance the SIM community can give me in this
research endeavor.
Kind Regards,
Cyndi Martin
