Hello,

Many of you may or may not have heard of the new KBOR requirements for the undergraduate program. It is called CORE 34 (the number of units for the core general education requirements) and it comes directly from KBOR. In addition, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is in charge of implementing the program at KU. The main goal for this change is to make it easier for Kansas students to transfer to KU from community colleges and other universities. It also lowers the number of minimum required general education courses. The courses most effected are foundational and introductory classes designed for freshman and sophomore. This will have an uneven influence on departments. There is no need to get into the details, but after several meetings with the College as well as POLS undergraduate director, it is clear that the new CORE 34 will not have a significant influence on our department. In fact, many of the changes KBOR is requesting, we have already implemented or plan to make the changes. In short, our department is ready for CORE 34. If you have an interest in learning more about CORE 34 (some light reading over the break), then here is the link https://kucore.ku.edu/ku-core-34-1.

Take Care,
John
