Hello,

The Department of Molecular Biosciences reported an incident of a non-student disrupting a class and filming it for their Youtube channel. This is reported as a repeat offender and so far, POLS classes have not been a target, but I believe you should be aware. Professor Scott Hefty has provided an explanation and tips on dealing with this situation below and I want to share it with you. In short, if this happens you ask them to leave and if they do not respond, then have your GTA or one of your students call KUPD to escort them out.

Take Care,

John

We had a person (non-student) interrupt a class today in Budig Hall. According to KUPD, the person appears to be generating YouTube content/attention - and they had a partner with some more professional filming equipment. They are repeat offenders and were notified that they are no longer permitted to be on campus.

While this event was not dangerous, we wanted to make everyone aware. They are increasing security patrols in Budig for the rest of the semester.

It also is an opportunity to highlight Safety first - if a person attempts to interrupt a class and is not responding immediately to your directions, call or ask TA/students to call 911 (campus call will go to KUPD). Ask them to leave and inform them that security is on the way - but don’t (physically) confront them. If the episode doesn’t appear to be quickly resolved, it may be best to excuse students from the room (decrease student impact).

Let’s hope for an uneventful remaining semester (at least related to events like these!). If you have questions about classroom challenges like this, please contact us (Biology Chairs - Susan or Lena/Directors - Rob or Scott).

Thank you!
