Dear Chairs and Directors,

We are seeking course proposal offerings for the College’s winter session. Winter session courses will be offered online during winter break between the dates of December 28th, 2020 – January 22nd, 2021. Grades will be due by February 5th, 2021.

If you are interested in offering a course from your department during the winter session please complete the attached worksheet and return it to Samantha Montague at smontag at ku.edu<mailto:smontag at ku.edu> by July 31st. Proposals will be reviewed by the College Dean’s office, and departments will be notified on the acceptance of proposals by August 14th.

Proposed courses for winter session need to fulfill a critical need for student progression. Good examples of winter session courses are:

· KU Core

· High demand

· Service courses

· Workshops or seminars needed for specific programs

It is recommended that course design with CODL begin as soon as possible for all approved courses. CODL will contact instructors to set up an initial consultation which must take place by September 11th. If an instructor cannot meet these deadlines the College reserves the option to cancel the course. The intentional design and development of 4-week winter session courses is critical to both instructor and student success.

Below you will find more information about the staffing and budget model for winter session, with additional appointment details in the attached document. If you have additional questions, please contact Samantha Montague at smontag at ku.edu<mailto:smontag at ku.edu> or Dr. Holly Storkel, Associate Dean for Academic Innovation and Student Success at hstorkel at ku.edu<mailto:hstorkel at ku.edu>.

Otherwise, complete the attached worksheet and submit that to Samantha as soon as possible.

Staffing and Budget Model Information

o Winter session courses can be taught by faculty, lecturers, or GTA’s. The proposed salary amount for each type of instructor is listed in the attached spreadsheet and follows the same salary structure used for summer courses.

o An instructor can only teach one winter session course.

o Each course should target enrollment of 20-35 students. It may be possible to offer courses below these targets but must have a minimum of 12 students. We will review enrollment carefully and adjustment offerings and salary, as needed. Given consultation with the College Online and CODL, courses may scale beyond 35.

o It is preferable that winter session courses are taught on load, but can be taught as overloads if the instructor is already appointed full time and agrees to teach one additional section during winter. Courses taught on load could create opportunities for faculty to teach one less course during the fall or spring semester to allow them more time to focus on their research or other activities.

o Overload payment requests will be heavily scrutinized based on anticipated budget cuts in fiscal year 2021.

o You are required to outline teaching assignments for Fall 2020 and anticipated teaching assignments for Spring 2021 at the bottom of the attached proposal spreadsheet for each instructor, regardless of whether they are teaching on load or receiving a payment for teaching the course.
