FYI, Dean's recruitment call. Note the discussion of Langston Hughes positions
_____________________

Recruitment during the 2019-2020 academic year for appointments beginning fall 2020 will be funded through the reallocation of positions that become vacant due to retirements or resignations, with the exception of the Edwards Campus positions. Please ensure that all faculty planning to retire or resign before fall 2019 submit a written statement of their intentions, along with your endorsement as chair or director.

It is uncertain how many searches the Dean's Office will be able to authorize due to major College and University budget cuts. We will determine the number of approved faculty searches as the College's budget situation becomes clearer. In the meantime, it is important that each unit take time to substantively consider faculty hiring needs that are of the utmost importance. We anticipate being able to approve a limited number of searches, so your hiring justifications need to clearly articulate the impact of each proposed faculty hire to help us prioritize faculty searches across the College. That said, your unit should make requests that you and your colleagues deem most appropriate, budgetary constraints notwithstanding.

Your proposal should take into account priorities at the College and University levels, as well as the strategic planning you are currently doing within your unit. It is also helpful to understand how the proposed positions strengthen your department or program's scholarly stature more broadly and within the context of changes in the unit (e.g., faculty lost to attrition or retirement).

One revised feature of this year's faculty recruitment call is the opportunity to nominate an Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor for a targeted hire in your unit through the College's newly announced Langston Hughes Professorship initiative. You are invited to submit a single nominee at any rank for this professorship. This nominee's specialty should align with your unit's hiring priorities. In line with the Office of Diversity and Equity's "Excellence in Diversity" hiring guidelines, you generally should consider positions that may strategically increase the diversity of the College.

If your unit has an Edwards Campus program, please include requests for such faculty or instructional positions with your request. Please discuss the request with your Edwards Campus liaison before submitting. These should be listed in addition to your regular requests.

For each requested faculty search you will be required to provide the following information:

1. field of specialization (working title)

2. recommended rank

3. salary range

4. justification paragraph

5. total start-up including all renovation and other costs associated with research/creative space

6. portion of the start-up that will come from departmental resources

Please limit your justification for each position to a maximum of 250 words. You may present up to two (2) prioritized requests for each of the annual recruitment cycles for 2019-2020, 2020-2021, and 2021-2022 for a maximum of six (6) positions over the next three years. Given the shortage of available funds, it is important that your estimated start-up packages' costs be as accurate as possible. It is preferable that you err on the high side of the potential start-up cost range. If the start-up is too low, the College (and potentially also the department) must fund any additional start-up funds required for a particular candidate. The Dean's Office will assume that your unit has space available to accommodate any new hires. If space and/or renovation issues will be a factor, please include pertinent information (including an estimate of renovation costs) with your request.
