[Pols-l] Certificate and course approval

In response to PJ's email, John Kennedy was able to better detail the questions and responses than I was (below)

There are three general questions regarding the "Intelligence and National Security Studies" proposal for POLS.

First, who will teach these four new courses? The courses will be taught by outside faculty who are subject matter experts. The grant will pay for these instructors for the first five years and then the College will cover the post grant salaries. So this will not draw from our faculty to teach new courses.

Second, who will get the credit hours for these courses? These will be POLS courses and POLS will receive the credit hours. This should benefit the department.

Third, who will administer the program? The College has hired a specific point person to administer "Intelligence and National Security Studies". This will reduce the burden of program administration for POLS.

I would only add that if the program is to continue past 5 years the College would have to provide some resources to make that happen.

I think it is a good idea to have a meeting, with the usual comment that Friday at 11 is not convenient for me, personally speaking.

I'm in the undergrad committee and this looks just slightly different than what John sent us.

The difference I note is that in the certificate paperwork, the courses were listed as "LA&S 125", "LA&S 130", not as "POLS 125" and so forth. The reason this seems important is that these courses pre-suppose there are professors to offer them.  I have not heard details about that part of the story.

This appears to require the creation of a couple of professorships Military Intelligence experts.

We need to hire some experts in, well, National Institutions, to make this credible.
