Watson Library Carrel Application and Renewal

There are 25 study carrels on the fifth floor of Watson Library that are available for full time and emeritus faculty in the humanities or social and behavioral sciences to carry out specified research projects.  The carrels are lockable; they have a single desk and some shelves, but no window or phone.  They have wifi access, but do not come supplied with a computer.

Applications consist of a brief (one-page) statement of the scholarly project(s) to be pursued and the reasons for needing a library carrel, a list of all campus space currently assigned to exclusive or shared use by the faculty member, and an updated cv.

Criteria for selection will be:

  1.  need for Watson Library space for performing the work proposed
  2.  quality of proposed project
  3.  fairness in the distribution of work space
  4.  scholarly productivity

Applications for academic year 2016-2017 are due Friday, July 22 in electronic format (Word or PDF) and should be addressed to Associate Dean Paul Kelton (pkelton at ku.edu<mailto:pkelton at ku.edu>) and cc to Amanda Burghart (amccoy at ku.edu<mailto:amccoy at ku.edu>).

The term of occupancy for the carrels will run Aug. 1-July 31. There are a few rules that occupants will be required to follow, and CLAS reserves the right to reclaim a carrel if the rules are violated by its occupant.  Those rules are as follows:

*Use of the carrels is limited to posted library hours.
*All Library rules related to smoking, etc. are in effect.
*No library materials may be used in these carrels unless they are checked out to the occupant.
