"Brazil has a highly fragmented party system, which has been associated with government inefficiency and corruption" said Gabriel, "My dissertation explores how ideologies are represented in this seemingly chaotic environment. I traveled to Brazil twice (in the summer of 2024 and in February 2025) and interviewed 73 members of Brazil's Chamber of Deputies (the equivalent of the US House of Representatives), asking questions about their political ideology. In my dissertation, I compare those answers to the ideological positions of those deputies as measured by a) Their party platforms; b) Roll-call vote records."

The first trip was funded by a Tinker Grant (thanks to KU's Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies), and the second was made possible by KU's Doctoral Student Research Fund Award.

Graduate Student, Onat Kolcu, and Professor Robert Rohrschneider at the MPSA conference in Chicago.

Onat's presentation, titled “Terrorism and Voting Behavior: The Case of Türkiye,” examined how the funeral ceremonies of security officers shape political behavior in local communities across Türkiye. These emotionally charged events often become moments of national attention, and he explored how they influence the neighborhoods where they take place. This research highlights the powerful connection between personal loss, public symbolism, and voting behavior, offering significant insights for the political science literature.
