Winner and Honorable Mention of the Hemenway Public Service Award Announced

The Dole Institute of Politics established the Robert Hemenway Public Service Award in May 2009 in honor of the retirement of the 16th Chancellor of the University of Kansas, Robert Hemenway.

The recipient of the 2021 Robert Hemenway Public Service Award is Michael Scott, a rising senior from Glenview, Illinois. He is majoring in political science and economics, with a minor in environmental studies. The award is given annually to a student leader, respected by peers, who is concerned with strengthening civic life at the University of Kansas: the overriding criterion for this award is commitment to civic engagement and public service, with demonstrated leadership. Michael has shown he is an advocate for public service through his many pursuits on campus and in the community, including volunteering for voter registration and at the Douglas County Health Department vaccination center, as well as participating in KU Debate. After completing his undergraduate degree, Michael plans to pursue a degree in law and a career in politics.

He has a diverse background in civic engagement and community involvement. He has trained with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), is an intern at the U.S. House of Representatives, was an intern for the Kansas Forest Service, and volunteered for community outreach at KU. After completing his undergraduate degrees, Baset plans to pursue a career as an ambassador and work in government and diplomacy.
