International Women’s Day Zoom

The foundation provides free K-12 education and post-secondary vocational training to young women and girls in Kabul Province, Afghanistan. For Women's Day, the foundation will host an event focusing on women in Afghanistan, female empowerment, and girls' education through the lens of this year's International Women's Day theme of "Challenge to Change." Dr. Kristen Ghodsee will speak about the socialist history of International Women’s Day. Dr. Ghodsee is Prof. of Russian and East European Studies, UPenn. Her work has been translated into over 20 languages and has appeared in The New Republic, The Lancet, Ms. Magazine, The Washington Post, and The New York Times. She is the author of Why Women Have Better Sex Under Socialism: And Other Arguments for Economic Independence. International Relations Council (IRC) Summer Internship

The IRC is looking for student interns who are passionate about understanding the world and contributing to meaningful local conversations that bring a global perspective to the community. Internships with the IRC can provide valuable experience in the nonprofit sector, supplement coursework, and put professional skills to use. Internships for summer 2021 will be conducted remotely. This is an unpaid internship but students can receive academic credit by enrolling in GIST 495: Global Internship. Interns may work in any of the following areas: digital resources, events, fund development, global education, and membership. The Ripples of Syria

A decade in, the intractable conflict in Syria shows no signs of slowing or disentangling, and ripples continue to be felt through Syrian society, governance, and the larger region. Jomana Qaddour, nonresident senior fellow with the Rafik Hariri Center and Middle East Programs at the Atlantic Council, will help participants examine the Syrian conflict, its impacts on Syrian society, and on neighboring communities. Nowruz: A Festival of Harmony with Nature

The KU Persian Language Club will host a virtual presentation on Nowruz! Presented by KU Tajik Foreign Language Teacher Assistant, Salmonshoh Orzuev. Nowruz marks the beginning of the new year in Persian calendar and is widely celebrated as a spring festival in Iran, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and the surrounding world. In 2009, UNESCO included Nowruz in the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. In 2010, the UN declared March 21 as the International Day of Nowruz noting “the orientation of Nowruz towards the affirmation of life in harmony with nature, the awareness of the inseparable link between constructive labour and natural cycles of renewal and the solicitous and respectful attitude towards natural sources of life.” Mr. Orzuev will mainly focus on the celebration of the festival in Tajikistan.
