Around the World Language Workshop: Spanish

Around the World Language Workshops features a language taught by a KU international student. Participants learn how to say simple greetings and common phrases in another language. New Website Launch & Presentation

Cold War in the Heartland explores the sometimes hidden history of the global conflict in the American Midwest. The website is a new and free resource that highlights ways the Cold War’s legacies remain relevant today. Conceived and supervised by CREES Director Prof. Erik Scott, with original research and design completed by KU students, the website brings together rare primary source documents, case studies, and interviews. Included are guided discussions, activities, and interactive timeline. People to People International Internship

This opportunity was created for KU students in partnership between People to People International (PTPI) and KU’s Global & International Studies Program. PTPI creates lasting cross-cultural connections between citizens around the world to help explore global issues and enrich communities. Interns may assist in event coordination, communication with chapters around the world, data collection on projects, report editing, and strategic planning. This is an unpaid internship but students can receive academic credit by enrolling in GIST 495: Global Internship. Dr. Kristen R. Ghodsee

Dr. Kristen Ghodsee will speak about the socialist history of International Women’s Day. Dr. Ghodsee is Prof. of Russian and East European Studies, UPenn. Her work has been translated into over 20 languages and has appeared in The New Republic, The Lancet, Ms. Magazine, The Washington Post, and The New York Times. She is the author of Why Women Have Better Sex Under Socialism: And Other Arguments for Economic Independence. The Ripples of Syria

A decade in, the intractable conflict in Syria shows no signs of slowing or disentangling, and ripples continue to be felt through Syrian society, governance, and the larger region. Jomana Qaddour, nonresident senior fellow with the Rafik Hariri Center and Middle East Programs at the Atlantic Council, will help participants examine the Syrian conflict, its impacts on Syrian society, and on neighboring communities. In recent years, adjusted tariffs and trade, leadership transitions, peace, conflict, and shifting ambitions and alliances around the world have left their impact on the international community. To unpack the significance of where the world is and is headed, the International Relations Council proudly welcomes Secretary Chuck Hagel, former Secretary of Defense. A US Army veteran and member of the Senate Foreign Relations and Intelligence Committees, Sec.
