2009 Dole Lecture: “Unlimited Partners” with Bob and Elizabeth Dole

Former Senators Bob and Elizabeth Dole speak about their lifelong careers in public service, their strong partnership, and the current state of politics for the 2009 Dole Lecture. Although the conversation starts off with a more serious tone, the conversation progresses into what is arguably the most humor-filled Dole Institute program in its history. Whether you revisit this program to be inspired by the uplifting message showing that politics can be an honorable profession or for the pure joy of watching their quick, back-and-forth wit, this is not a program to miss.

Trivia

At the 1983 Senate confirmation of Elizabeth Dole for Secretary of Transportation, Bob Dole told the committee that he felt like this historic figure, and went on to say, “I regret that I have but one wife to give my country’s infrastructure.”
Which historic figure did he say he felt like? You can find the answer in the Q&A segment of this week’s Greatest Hits program or we’ll tell you in next Digital Dole Institute newsletter!

Answer to the trivia question from March 27:

At the first presidential debate between Bill Clinton and Bob Dole on October 6, 1996, which of the two men became the first presidential candidate to ever plug their website on national TV?

Bob Dole. You can still visit his website at: http://www.dolekemp96.org/<https://doleinstitute.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=971c9a61bc896e4077645661a&id=ba6c5580c3&e=1ec2f9157d>

Reagan's Letter Thanking Dole for Serving on Social Security Commission

Saving Social Security in 1983 is one of Dole’s proudest accomplishments. In this letter<https://doleinstitute.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=971c9a61bc896e4077645661a&id=f88b4d5063&e=1ec2f9157d>, President Ronald Reagan thanks Senator Bob Dole for agreeing to serve on the National Commission of Social Security Reform. Although the Commission would take longer than the two year-deadline Reagan set – and ultimately disagree on a course of action – a last-ditch, bipartisan effort led by Senators Dole and Patrick Moynihan (D-NY) in January 1983 succeeded in breaking a legislative stalemate and saving Social Security. President Reagan signed the amendments into law on April 20, 1983.

The contents of the letters cover a wide range of topics, including current events, personal notes, responses to letters from Dole, and more.
