Reagan's Letter Thanking Dole for Serving on Social Security Commission</h2>

this letter</a>, President Ronald Reagan thanks Senator Bob Dole for agreeing to serve on the National Commission of Social Security Reform. Although the Commission would take longer than the two year-deadline Reagan set – and ultimately disagree on a course
of action – a last-ditch, bipartisan effort led by Senators Dole and Patrick Moynihan (D-NY) in January 1983 succeeded in breaking a legislative stalemate and saving Social Security. President Reagan signed the amendments into law on April 20, 1983.<br>
