[Pols-announce] From the Political Science office, Univ. of KS

Hello & welcome and welcome back to those who will be in the Political Science Department here at KU this Fall!  I am sending this over Pols announce, which should go out to the faculty and students here in the department.

-Faculty, and those of you who are Lecturers or GTAs, today's message is mostly for you as the university goes over to DUO authentication, you should go and pre-enroll in it by August 9. <https://myidentity.ku.edu/multifactor/>  Some things will be requiring both your KU log in and additionally a code before you can get logged in.  Things such as getting on Blackboard to work with the classes you teach I am told will require it.  Also, staff, such as myself and Megan, will need it to get on to Enroll & Pay etc. to do our work.
 What is multi-factor authentication (MFA)?<https://itsecurity.ku.edu/multi-factor-authentication-faqs>
Logging in with MFA requires something you know and something you have. Something you know is your KU Online ID and password, something you have is a device. At KU, we will ask you to register a mobile phone and set that phone to receive either push notifications or text message codes from Duo, our multi-factor authentication partner.

  All faculty, staff and GA/GTA/GRAs who are part of the Lawrence and/or Edwards campuses will be required to use multi-factor authentication. Undergraduate student employees may be enrolled at the request of their department. The roll out of MFA service will happen in phases, so not everyone will begin using the service at the same time.   At this time, students are not automatically included in the Duo multi-factor authentication program. However, if there is a situation where students should be using multi-factor authentication, please reach out to the IT Security Office at itsec at ku.edu<mailto:itsec at ku.edu>. Additionally, Affiliated Corporations (e.g. Union, Alumni, Athletics staff) will not be included in the Duo multi-factor authentication program. However, the plan is to extend Duo to Affiliated Corporation staff in the future at a to-be-determined date. Retirees are exempt and will not need multi-factor authentication.

-All,  I look forward to seeing you this Fall.  For the Fall semester we welcome a new faculty member, Jack Zhang, and also lecturer, Clay Britton, who will be teaching Constitutional Law during the Fall semester.  Also some of the GTAs will be new. After orientations and other start up activities, classes start on August 26, and in
September we will have our annual department picnic on Sept. 29, 4pm - more to come on that, but it will be held at a shelter near Clinton Lake this year.
