Hi Don:
If possible, can you please share the email below to grad students in your department? I want to advertise my grad seminar on “Social Psychology and Film” (Psyc 993; course #28065) to increase enrollment. Thanks for considering this request!
Best,

Hi grad students:
I want to draw your attention to a grad seminar I am teaching this Fall 2018. It is called “Social Psychology and Film” (Psyc 993) and we will be meeting on Wednesdays from 2-4:50 pm to screen a movie, read a couple of relevant psychological articles to that week's movie, and, more importantly, have a discussion based on that material.
What are the goal(s) of the course?
First, I think it is important to turn to resources outside of psychology to help shape our thinking about the human condition. Second, I want to propose to you that the arts – in this instance, film – affords us insight into understanding psychological phenomena and, more broadly, what it means to be human. Given the visual culture we live in I think it is essential to have critical "ways of seeing" and interrogate the ideologies, social representations, cultural stereotypes, power, etc. that are at play in film. We will use a film each week to do some/all of the following: (1) provide specific instances of social behavior as they take place in a specific environment; (2) present vivid and memorable examples of human behavior that psychological theory may help clarify; (3) specific portrayals of social issues in the mass media, social representations of groups, and how they are perceived by the public; and (4) present issues/questions that may be relatively untouched by (social) psychological research.
Course Format:
This will be a seminar course meeting once a week. Class time will be dedicated to watching a film and then having a discussion synthesizing the film and the week’s readings. We will also have a guest speaker or two and some field trips to the movie theater and museum(s) on KU campus.
Let me know if there are any questions. Thanks.
Best,
Ludwin
