Subject: Grad Student Tuition Tax
Colleagues:
Some of you may have seen information about the tax reform bill and the possible affects it will have on higher education. Graduate programs are particularly concerned about taxes on tuition reductions, assistance, or waivers, which have not been taxed in the past. I want to make sure that you are aware of this information as we enter our main recruitment season for graduate students, even though we do not yet know if this bill will be approved. The AAU provided the attached summary that highlights the areas related to higher education.
Several higher educational organizations, including the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) and Association of American Universities (AAU), are advocating on behalf of higher education. The Chancellor's, Provost's, and Human Resource Management offices are keeping up-to-date on developments in these efforts and will update us as more information becomes available.
