Dear Faculty and Students

Today we put online the announcement for the 2018 Summer Statistical
Institute, http://crmda.ku.edu/statscamp.  This year there will be a new
workshop about using Python for data acquisition and analysis. We'll
have the always popular sections on R and Structural Equation Modeling,
of course.  Please check it out.

On Friday, Feb 16, we have many exciting opportunities that I want
everybody to be aware of.

In the afternoon, at 3PM, we will have the first in this semester's
"career opportunities" series.  Steve Simons, who has worked as a
statistical consultant in Kansas City, will offer the following presentation

"Setting Up Your Independent Consulting Practice"
Watson Rm. 455 3PM (Feb. 16)
http://crmda.ku.edu/simon-20180216

The weekly activities of the topical workgroups will also continue.  If
you have not joined yet, but might like to, please feel free to attend
and see for yourself.

Before that, the 3 workgroups (https://crmda.ku.edu/workgroups) will be
having meetings as well.

1. Bayesian multi-level modeling

Watson Rm. 455, 11AM

Topics: More on the Bayesian updating presentation, Interact with Stan,
plan future assignments for workgroup members

2. Spatial Statistics

Watson Rm. 455, 12PM

Topics: Professor Jacob Fowles (KU SPAA and CRMDA) will present some
work in progress that is conducting a meta-analysis of the spatial
econometric literature in public finance.  Additionally, we will hear
status reports from the topical working groups.

3. Python

Watson 410A, 1PM

Topics: Professor Jon Lamb (KU English and CRMDA) will offer a
discussion of sentiment analysis.  He’ll be using Shakespeare’s sonnets
as a starter corpus.

In case you are planning for the future, next week we will have the
semi-annual Git for Novices presentation!  Everybody is welcome
