Dear LAN Neighborhood Association Members,
You probably are aware that a city consultant is proposing relocating
city hall from the current building downtown to the former Sally Mae
building northeast of 6th and Iowa. If you are having difficulty
picturing this building, it may be because it is completely invisible
from nearly any direction. This proposal has been scheduled for
discussion at the October 15 City Commission meeting. After a discussion
at the September LAN meeting, LAN officers moved that we send a letter
to the City Commission opposing this move. Some of the reasons for
keeping City Hall Downtown include:
* The City Hall anchors the northern end of downtown. Abandoning the
current location will adversely effect all of downtown, the gem of
our community.
* The new site will be less visible and less accessible than our
current city hall.
* The funds required have not been estimated, but will certainly be
quite large.
* A decision to rearrange key public space cannot be done on an
administrative basis and should not be considered for approval
solely at the City Commission level.
I have attached a draft letter to the commission.*The officers ask that
you consider these concerns and vote yes or no on submitting a letter
opposing this proposed relocation. Please email Holli Joyce at
holliajoyce at yahoo.com with your vote asap. A majority of membership (8)
is required to pass this motion.
*
Thanks,
Gary Webber, LAN Secretary
