I agree with you.

Good point, Kyle.  Actually on the north side, the bicycle lane is protected by the motor vehicle parking.  On the south side it has a 3 foot wide buffer, to which could be added bollards.  But the City is squeamish about bollards, claiming they are in the way of snow plowing and street sweeping (which I don't agree).  So I first wanted to get the overall concept recognized, before venturing into bollards.  But they can happen if everyone pushes for them.  I'm sure game.

Michael,

Why not have bollards and/or concrete barriers, so that the bike lanes are more protected?

Thanks,

Hi all:
K.U. has told the City that the "high volume street" they want would be a corridor along Mississippi St from 11th to 9th, and along 9th St from Mississippi to downtown.

9th Street is already a multi-modal street, though poorly designed.  It's being planned for an upgrade along with construction of the Jayhawk Watershed Stormwater project.  The City Assistant Director of MSO, Melinda Harger, told me that they also want a 9th Street design to coordinate with K.U. plans.

Sustainability Action Network (group I'm with) has proposed the attached design for 9th Street, to match the motor vehicle lanes with those west of Mississippi St., and include protected bicycle lanes.  9th Street has the highest collision rate of any street between bicycles and motor vehicles (including one death).

As a K.U. corridor to downtown, 9th Street needs to address bicycle and pedestrian safety, not just motor vehicle use - IMO.

As some of you may be aware, KU has announced another gateway project and football expansion at 11th and Mississippi streets. This expansion may include a multi-purpose year round conference center, retail space, medical offices, and perhaps a hotel at a later date. A developer has purchased neighborhood property at 1030 Maine, directly north of the stadium. Chancellor Girod has stated Mississippi Street between Ninth and Fambrough will be a "high volume street."

Neighborhood organizations from Old West Lawrence, OREAD, West Hills, and University Heights have formed a multi-neighborhood exploratory group to gather information both from KU and the City regarding the development at 11th and Mississippi. While these four neighborhoods are in close proximity to the area targeted, KU’s plans are a citywide concern. If your neighborhood LAN representative is interested in joining the multi-neighborhood group, please contact Katy Nitcher, nitcher at sunflower.com.
