So Nick, welcome to East Lawrence! I read your TIF Presentation & have some
thoughts, questions, comments. First, we dealt with TIF giveaways to
developers for years & they were primarily damaging to surrounding
neighborhoods so just the mention of TIFs is scary. That said-"increased
height" is always pushed to help density. Remember that Brook Creek & East
Lawrence primarily have 50 ft lots. We are already contributing to density
& sustainability by simply remaining here.
I would include Tiny Houses in your suggested options.
Allowing housing to be built to lot lines ignores the environmental
damage, drainage issues we are grappling with. In specific zones perhaps,
but added square feet have sustainability impacts.
Minneapolis just passed Boarding House zoning to provide true low cost
housing for poor people. I think this is really smart & could help us close
the gap. There are Lawrence models already; non-profits, faith groups,
Oxford Houses (like the 1 in Old West Law), LHA Hope House, Bert Nash
supportive group housing, etc.
What does #7.4 mean?
Have you presented to Rebecca Buford & the Tenants to Homeowners/Land Trust
Board? She is a genius woman who can help hammer out new policies to create
more affordable housing. She also keeps abreast of sucessful & unsuccessful
efforts around the nation.
Accessory Dwelling Units are so problematic. If you can afford to build one
or to modify a garage you are not the poor &/or elderly people who need ADU
rental income to age in place.
How do we control building ADUs just for Air bn Bs? This does not help with
the affordable housing crisis.
Lastly, until we get a handle on local police traffic stops of people of
color, harassment of unhoused people & the militaristic model our police
force employs I certainly do not want additional police patrols as an
incentive.
Thanks for your work on this, KT Walsh
