Dear all,
I am pleased to announce the publication of Phycologia Europaea Phaeophyta,
that updates the Scandinavian taxonomic literature published in 1996.
The new edition has a new title and is significantly enlarged including
taxa from the NE Atlantic,
the Mediterranean, the Black and Caspian Seas, as also Scandinavia and the
Arctic Ocean.
The text is analytic compiling protologues, illustrations, and other
information from essential publications since Linné.
It is synthetic grouping taxa based on the same type.
It is synoptic summarizing the taxonomic literature of European
brown algae.
Some highlights:
*Sargassum atlanticum* Bory replaces *S. vulgare* (*nom.illeg.*).
*Cystoseira peucedanifolia *(S.G. Gmelin) from Propontis is an earlier
synonym of *C. compressa*.
The type locality of *Fucus saccharinus* L. is Göteborg and not Gotland.
The type of *Ulva latissima *L. was apparently lost, long before Linne’s
herbarium was examined by Smith and Dawson,
and confusion was created in an attempt to incorporate information from
Gunnerus’s and Strøm’s publications in *Mantissa altera.*
Chapters on early brown algal classifications and the roots of systematics
are included.
The work has been published in a single volume with a total of xxxxvii +
759 pages (A4).
It has a Swedish ISBN (978-91-519-9387-4) and itis priced 700 SEC (65 €) +
postage (30 € within EU).
Copies are available from the author.
With kind regards,
A. Athanasiadis
