Proper linkage back to the publication is essential for sorting out
homonyms, which are commonly confused in the aggregating databases.
Because much of the popular use of the databases focuses on the total
reported data range, erroneous outliers disproportionally affect the
results (e.g., major errors in geologic range being used to miscalibrate
molecular clocks).

Actually having taxonomic editors for a database is essential, but often
neglected.
