[Taxacom] Describing genera without molecular phyolgies

I fully agree with Jason. But the contrary happens all the time. In the mega-genus  Aphodius (dung beetles), Jason's group, all the numerous subgenera were upgraded to genera without any phylogenetic analysis at all. Since this must have been progress, it got readily accepted (except by some old farts like me who still use Aphodius for the whole thing). Now that they are all genera and their distinguishing characters are often minor, the creation of additional genera started and continues if some species doesn't fit into the existing typologically defined genera. A combination of the urge to be taxonomically up to date and the uncritical trust in authority has led to this unfortunate situation. Science works in mysterious ways.
We need phylogenetic analyses (not necessarily molecular, but it can help) before making wide-ranging changes to the first parts of established binomina.

Thanks John. A useful article as I am struggling with the same problems in my group but from the other side.  I can't comment on snails but my opinion is that without a phylogenetic framework, molecular or morphological, taxonomists should be extremely prudent creating supra-specific taxa.
