The article makes the argument that biodiversity has a natural geographic
structure that can only be manifest and conserved through biogeography - as
stated in the sentences below excerpted from the article.

"The science of biogeography has profoundly changed our understanding of
how animal and plant species diverge in geographic space in response to
geological change. These developments have important implications for the
conservation of biodiversity, because they highlight a geographic structure
for biodiversity that cannot be encapsulated solely by the listing and
preservation of species."
