[Taxacom] Extinction by fire

Hi all,
I agree with Leonie that a laser show would be far more sensible. Big firework displays are terribly expensive, and that money could be better spent on actually helping people (not just for entertainment's sake). And there is the pollution of the immediate environment with metal toxins, harmful chemicals, not to mention the smoke. And of course, all the house fires, forest fires, etc., caused by the careless users on holidays throughout the world.
Sydney has thankfully endeavoured to make it's displays carbon neutral, but it has to resort to purchasing carbon offsets to do so. If cities (both small and large) want to make a real difference, just ban fireworks and switch to laser shows. And that goes for the 4th of July as well. It would be good for the environment, the atmosphere and climate, save money, and less noise pollution as well. How about the "laser's red glare" replacing the "rocket's red glare" and bombs bursting in air.

Sydney City NYE fireworks were about money, the economy & tourism.
Not about common sense.

We have a total fire ban.

Fireworks were cancelled in many of the major Sydney suburban centres eg
Parramatta (25 km from city CBD), Liverpool (26 km) & Campbelltown (42 km).

Fireworks were cancelled in our Capital City - Canberra (located within the
state of NSW).

A laser show would be far more sensible.

Lately there has been a lot of attention given to the deliberate burning of
forests in Brazil, but it seems that the fires in Australia may also be
having an immense destructive impact on species survival. There may be
Australians on this list who are much better versed on the situation than
I, but I am receiving some rather horrifying communications from Australian
colleagues to the effect that major habitats are just disappearing up in
smoke and all the species with it. More worrying is the seeming
indifference at certain quarters that this may well be a new situation of
unprecedented loss going into the future. Still, apparently did not put off
major fireworks (and more smoke) for the New Year. She'll be right mate - I
guess.
