>>> a misspelling (originally proposed by Meinert as an unjustified emendation) appears to have taken its place in general usage

The first time the spelling "Japyx" and "Japygidae" appear in the literature is here:
Meinert, F.V.A. (1865) Campodeae: en familie af Thysanurernes orden. -- Naturhistorisk Tidsskrift 3(3): 400–440.

https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=coo.31924101122830&view=1up&seq=467
https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=coo.31924101122830&view=1up&seq=470

Meinert clearly refers "Japyx" and "Japygidae" to Haliday's original work, and there is no indication of an intentional change of the spelling. This means that this is not an (unjustified) emendation, but a subsequent spelling that by its prevailing usage is deemed to be the correct original spelling.

The correct nomenclature should therefore be:
----------------------------------------------------------------
Japyx Haliday, 1864: 442. Originally as "Iapyx" but with the subsequent spelling "Japyx" by Meinert (1865: 431), with is deemed the correct original spelling through prevailing usage (Code Art. 33.3.1).

Hi Stephen, I thought the same initially, however Haliday's original description is available via BHL at https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.biodiversitylibrary.org%2Fpage%2F27559041&data=02%7C01%7Ctpape%40snm.ku.dk%7C1985f5b2b25d4852749508d7df2eb2c0%7Ca3927f91cda14696af898c9f1ceffa91%7C0%7C0%7C637223263966589337&sdata=%2BkMioX6TUqWE1RRnPwRw8NhjRMRkCLkeoMoq8yEZRQA%3D&reserved=0, where he seems to me to have constructed "Iapix" correctly (no obvious orthographic substitution of "I" for "J") and also states that the name comes from "the poetical name for Calabrian [people]", the forerunners of whom are apparently still known as Iapygians, from the former region Iapycia ( https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FIapygians&data=02%7C01%7Ctpape%40snm.ku.dk%7C1985f5b2b25d4852749508d7df2eb2c0%7Ca3927f91cda14696af898c9f1ceffa91%7C0%7C0%7C637223263966589337&sdata=1%2FchZVMSwRSbECZcQThHNzuD%2FuGNPDzV3BCsMlL8gm4%3D&reserved=0), originally named from Greek mythology after Daedalus' son Iapyx... so the original spelling seems sound to me, but as Francisco said, a misspelling (originally proposed by Meinert as an unjustified emendation) appears to have taken its place in general usage.

All interesting background...

Regards - Tony
