Have you taken a look at the latest edition of the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants? It should give you guidelines, including making use of cultivar group, “Group”, among other possibilities for naming. I think the 9th edition (2016) is the most recent, but looks like only a sample with order form is available online: https://www.ishs.org/sites/default/files/static/sh_18_Sample_chapters.pdf. I would be interested in any opinions as to how to treat species names for host plant records when hybrids are involved, especially where there is a lot of crossing of hybrids as well. I have a case in Paeonia where there are many, many hybrids. One example is 'Pink Vanguard' x 'Paula Fay', a cross that includes lactiflora, macrophylla, officinalis (or peregrina), and mlokosewitschii. Perhaps I should just refer to the hybrid names along in such cases.
