The Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung (SGN) is a member of the
Leibniz Association and is based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. SGN
conducts natural history research with almost 800 employees and research
institutions in six federal states. Within SGN, the Senckenberg
Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (SBiK-F) explores the
interactions between biodiversity, climate, and society.

In the context of the funded research project “Vienna’s global
biodiversity footprint. A multi-scale analysis outlining options to
reduce urban pressures on biodiversity”, SBiK-F invites applications
for a

PhD position (part time, 50 %)

We seek a doctoral researcher (m/f) (PhD candidate) to work in an
interdisciplinary research project that investigates the biodiversity
implications of Vienna’s food and biomass consumption. The project is
funded by the Vienna Science and Technology Fund, WWTF. It is a
collaborative effort between SBiK-F, the Institute of Social Ecology at
the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna and the
Department of Botany and Biodiversity Research at the University of
Vienna.
The PhD candidate based at SBiK-F will focus on compiling and
processing data from global and national statistics for the development
of robust approaches for systematically linking urban food and biomass
consumption to the location and the system of production. By doing so,
this work contributes to operationalizing telecouplings in the global
land systems.

Your tasks

urban region’s food and biomass supply
●	Integrate different data types to localize and analyze
Vienna’s food and biomass supply patterns
●	Develop a simple model that links urban food and biomass demand
to supply regions and their land-use and ecosystem-productivity
patterns
●	Participate in project meetings and contribute to project
reporting
●	Publish results in international journals in cooperation with
the members of the project team; the publications form the backbone of
the PhD thesis to be defended at Goethe University, Frankfurt

Your profile

●	Master’s degree in an interdisciplinary research field, such
as environmental or sustainability science, industrial or social
ecology, physical geography or another relevant field

●	Interest in working in an interdisciplinary and international
environment
●	Programming skills and familiarity in working with large
datasets
●	Excellent English oral and written communication skills; German
skills are an asset but not mandatory

What is awaiting you?

●	An interesting task in a dynamic team of researchers in an
international research group
●	Affiliation with the Goethe University Frankfurt and membership
in its graduate academy GRADE
●	The possibility to build a network with scientists at an
international level and attend national and international conferences
●	Flexible working hours – annual special payment – company
pension scheme – Senckenberg ID card for free entry in museums in
Frankfurt

Salary and benefits are according to a public service position in
Germany (TV-H E 13, 50%). The contract should start as soon as possible
and is limited to three years. The Senckenberg Research Institute
supports equal opportunity of men and women and therefore strongly
