[Taxacom] Lepidoptera Frederick Moore 1877

Dear John:

I studied various groups of Lepidoptera in the collection of the Natural History Museum, London, and I am pretty sure that Moore's "Exp." refers to wingspan rather wing length. However, during the time, the wing setting of Lepidoptera might not be standardized so sometimes the "Exp." in his publication is slightly larger than that that of the actual specimen with a modern setting requirement. This situation often occurs in some groups of which the forewing is rather elongated.

This is an inquiry directed to any Lepidoptera taxonomist who might be
closely acquainted with the taxonomic works of Frederick Moore who wrote in
the 1800's. IN an 1877 paper he refers to wing measurements as "Exp." Does
anyone by any chance have sufficient familiarity with Moore's publications
to definitively know whether that refers to wingspan or wing length? If so
I would be pleased to hear from them.
