[Taxacom] Granatina

Thank you. I am going to go with Uraeginthus. The combination of Catalogue of life and the worldbirdname site is a good enough justification for my purposes.

Hi Mary,
It looks like Granatina is a previously used name (originally attributed to Bonaparte, 1850, but correctly to Sharpe, 1891) for taxa currently in Uraeginthus, the latter being the senior name; all species are presently listed in Uraeginthus in the present Catalogue of Life, which gets its bird information from ITIS, relevant page here: https://www.itis.gov/servlet/SingleRpt/SingleRpt?search_topic=TSN&search_value=179622 - which follows the 2012 version of Zoonomen. As noted earlier by Rod, Harrison (1962) spotted the priority of Uraeginthus over Granatina and recommended that the older name be used for all species of the genus.
Avibase accepts Uraeginthus for some of these, see https://avibase.bsc-eoc.org/avibase.jsp?pg=search&qstr=Uraeginthus, but uses Granatina for 2 species, U. granatinus (as G. granatina) and U. ianthinogaster (as G. ianthinogaster). The reason for this is not stated but it appears to follow a change for those two species only from Uraeginthus to Granatina between Clements 5th edition (1999-2005) and 6th edition (2006): in other words those treatments are implicitly recogizing Granatina as a separate genus from Uraeginthus (previously it was sometimes employed as a subgenus within Uraeginthus). With the limited searching at my disposal, however, I have not been able to find a justification for such a treatment.
So you have a couple of courses of action - either ask the authors of the Clements checklist and/or Avibase for their justification for promoting Granatina to a separate genus, or follow ITIS and present CoL in using Uraeginthus for all of the species involved.
In answer to your other question, it seems that Granatina (= Uraeginthus) hawkeri is presently considered a subspecies of Granatina (=Uraeginthus) ianthinogaster, at least according to Avibase.
Hope this helps,
Best regards - Tony

It seems it comes down to “IF the two genera are to be combined”, Uraeginthus has priority (see biostor link in Rod’s response). Avibase seems to accept it but not worldbirdnames.org<http://worldbirdnames.org>. Almost like working with botanists….

Hi Mary,
From BHL and Nomenclature Zoologicus, the author is Sharp https://biodiversitylibrary.org/page/8328345 (slightly complicated history of the name).
From BHL and Biostor, Harrison argued that Uraeginthus has priority
Harrison CJO (1962) The relative priority of the generic names Uraeginthus and Granatina. Bulletin of The British Ornithologists' Club 82: 171-172. Retrieved from http://biostor.org/reference/113138
I can’t help with whether the names are synonyms or not.
Regards,
Rod
