Subject: A Way to Guarantee that Humanity Heeds Your Warning

Dear Richard Zander,

My name is Elijah Osborne; I am attending the George Washington University in Washington, DC, and I see that you signed the Union of Concerned Scientists' Warning to Humanity to change its ways before the damage we've done to our planet becomes wholly irreversible.

I hope you don't mind me contacting you; it's just that I highly commend your efforts in this regard. It is indeed the best intention one can have to promote the long-term wellbeing of all known sentient life forms, and now I have good news for you: There is a way to guarantee that everybody listens to your message of why we need to stop destroying our environment, and to guarantee that they stop causing all the other problems in the world as well.

You see, all the words written about why we should care for the environment—as eloquent as they are—face three major obstacles: the ignorance, apathy, and sadism that, for far too many people, are far too ingrained into their psyches to be undermined by simple words, or even by powerful images.

Regarding ignorance, even if these words could reach everybody, not everybody is capable of understanding them for their true logical merit; think of all the climate-change deniers who persist in their folly despite the mountains of evidence against their position.

Regarding apathy, too many people simply care about little or nothing besides themselves; this is not always their fault, as many people wish they could do more for the world but simply feel too firmly bound to their personal responsibilities. In others, however, the apathy is far more cynical as these people come to the conclusion that they will be dead anyway by the time the destruction of our environment can possibly affect them, so they do not care about any attempt to undo it.

Regarding sadism, finally, too many people enjoy the destruction of natural habitats and of human livelihoods besides their own. These are the people who condone or willingly perpetrate the destruction of our environment, and they, like the cynically apathetic, see no way it can harm them.

Now, laws can be passed against the offenses perpetrated by these people, and these laws can be successfully implemented to some degree; however, for people who believe they will not be punished for breaking these laws, or who do not fear any punishment for breaking them, the laws might as well not exist.

It is clear, then, that words and laws are not effective to truly change the world. The reasons they are not effective—the ignorance, apathy, and sadism that underlie all the world's problems—have a common root, and that is our egoic separation: the fact that each of us is only directly aware of his or her own life, and therefore is liable to care disproportionately for one's own wellbeing (as opposed to the wellbeing of others who may be in greater need) and disproportionately esteem one's own beliefs (as opposed to others' beliefs which may be more accurate or more logically sound).

The solution to all the world's problems, then, lies in the reversal of our egoic separation. What I am about to propose may sound strange at first, but on the website at the end of this message, it is explained in much greater detail, along with scientific evidence that it is achievable.

The solution is to create a mental unity among humans: a conglomeration of all our perspectives into a single, all-encompassing awareness in which we telepathically share each other's experiences as well as the emotional positivity or negativity behind each experience—as if all such emotions were each our very own—, so that we fully empathize with the effects of our actions upon everybody else and thus never cause each other to suffer. Everybody's perspectives of knowledge and reasoning will be diffused as well, and as all such perspectives are weighed against each other in our one aggregate intellect, the most accurate facts about the world and the most rational logic about what ought to be done in every situation will be made clear to everybody—as clear as such facts and logic already are to the enlightened minds from which they originate.

It will not be necessary for all humanity to participate perpetually in the unity, and it will most likely be accomplished through some wireless technology. In going about developing the unity, I suggest starting small by creating mental unities for only small groups of people, then perfecting the system and gradually expanding it to include more people, however this is determined necessary. We—everyone involved in the creation of mental unity—may conclude, for example, that humanity will only need a once-a-day "check-in" to the unity, or we may make it so that people will only share each other's thoughts in situations where empathy and immediate understanding are most needed.

Regardless, until mental unity is created—which it can be—, there is no guarantee against the chaos that defines our world today. The simple words we use to communicate, no matter how well-spoken or well-written, cannot eradicate all of the ignorance, apathy, and sadism that underlie all our problems, and laws are not effective for those who fear no contingent punishment for breaking them, so to ensure that mankind lives peacefully, we need to transcend words and laws: We need to transmit directly into every mind the pure thought—thought without the packaging of words that are so liable to be ignored and misunderstood—of why and how we should solve all the world's problems; we need to undermine all the world's ignorance, apathy, and sadism at the source.

Only then will mankind truly prosper:

·All murder, torture, and abuse will be stopped and prevented as the intentions of everyone planning to perpetrate these atrocities are made known, and as these perpetrators fully empathize with their potential victims' just desire to live without the pain caused by those atrocities; the fear of such pain before its victims experience it (since the perpetrators' intentions will be made known) and the anguish its victims feel while experiencing it will be directly shared with its perpetrators, effectively deterring them from committing or continuing to commit their atrocities.

·Everyone will give what they truly do not need to those whose situations are, as will become obvious, more severe: All the starving will be fed, all the homeless sheltered, and all the sick treated as the rich directly empathize with all the unnecessary struggles of the poor. All resources will be properly distributed to fulfill everybody's needs and non-superfluous desires (desires that do not encroach upon others' needs), and everybody will work equally hard based on their known abilities and their non-superfluous desires so as to earn their living equally. Everybody will also be educated equally to understand how to perform all the necessary tasks to live with comfort, health, and abundance.

·Hatred and prejudice toward individuals will become nonexistent as we all recognize our basic equality in having just as little control over the initial conditions of our lives and in being molded by our genetics and environment in all the same ways, recognizing that only circumstance is to blame for all the truly negative attributes people possess (as opposed to attributes that are truly harmless but against which people currently exhibit bias nonetheless); with this newfound compassion, everybody will simply be transformed out of their negative attributes.

·Last but not least, through accelerated scientific advancement (with our minds working together much more effectively) and the diffused wisdom of why we should care for our environment (against the superfluous desires of those who make money off of pollution and waste resources in light of the needs of other organisms), everybody will understand and implement the ways to cease and reverse the destruction of our home—as is the main goal of the Warning to Humanity.

As such, I would love to hear your thoughts on the idea of mental unity and how it can help any other goals you have for the world. If you have any concerns about this idea, they are likely addressed on the Clarifications page of my website, and if you do not find your own concerns addressed or find them unsatisfactorily addressed, please reach out to me so that we can together reach a common understanding on how to ensure humanity's salvation. I can help, for example, by gathering public support for it (which I've already started to do with the petition on my website), contacting and persuading any other authority to join in this cause (which I can do with the ethical basis for mental unity also delineated on my website), or volunteering for experimentation.

Regardless of whether or not you find anything to contribute to the technical aspect creating of mental unity, please share this idea with all of your colleagues as well, especially those whose areas of expertise are pertinent to the creation of mental unity. They too are welcome to contact me with any questions, comments, scientific insights on how mental unity can be created, and invitations to help them create it. Then, with sufficient research and support, we can eventually make it a reality.

I cannot do this alone. This way to guarantee that the destruction of our environment and all the other problems in the world are stopped requires the participation of all who have the ears with which to hear it, and since you already care about reversing these problems, your role in the discussion, support, research, and eventual actualization of mental unity is essential.

Once mental unity is actualized, then everybody else (whose ignorance, apathy, and/or sadism could not be overcome by simple words) will also participate in the direct reversal of all the suffering our world has witnessed. Those like you, who awaken now to the understanding of what needs to be done to save our dying planet, will be honored greatly.
