I'm not using this in the politicized sense that you imply, but rather 
as the end points of a continuum. Science as a way of knowing relies 
absolutely on evidence, but science as a social system has a major 
belief and appeal-to-authority component. Plenty of scientists, 
historians of science, and philosophers of science have written about 
the good, the bad, and the ugly of the social systems of science.
