I'm not using this in the politicized sense that you imply, but rather
as the end points of a continuum. Science as a way of knowing relies
absolutely on evidence, but science as a social system has a major
belief and appeal-to-authority component. Plenty of scientists,
historians of science, and philosophers of science have written about
the good, the bad, and the ugly of the social systems of science.
