Dear Pudji,

In the botanical Code, now ICNafp, names can be conserved by application to the relevant Committee in the interests of nomenclatural stability even if initially illegitimate (Article 14) i.e. not the earliest instance of that name validly published. In the case of Amomum, the definition of Roxburgh (1820) was accepted over that of Linnaeus (1753) by the Committee for Spermatophyta, see Taxon vol. 19, p.293 (1970), to avoid the change in name of some 150 species as opposed to 4 in Linnaeus' original usage. Linnaeus' type species, A. zingiber, is now included within Zingiber (as a synonym of Zingiber officinale Roscoe) which makes Amomum L., 1753 a synonym of Zingiber P. Miller, 1754 despite the reversal of normal priority in this instance.

(The zoological Code has similar provisions as well).

Regards - Tony
